COMING SOON TO PALM SPRINGS: RNA GLASS HOUSE
Updated: May 8
The 3,700 square foot modern home is built using LEED principles in energy-efficiency, innovation, and recycled materials.
We should acknowledge that it was Mies van der Rohe the architect who designed the 1st Glass House. Due to litigation to keep Mies' architectural vision, and because of the end of their love affair, Ms Farnsworth did not allow Mies to name her home as the Glass House, but the follower Philip Johnson did. You can imagine how Mies van der Rohe felt when he saw Philip Johnson naming his design as the 1st Glass House.
The Glass House, designed by award-winning Fort Lauderdale Head quartered Rex Nichols Architects (RNA), with LEED standards, is coming to Palm Springs. Inspired by Mies van der Rohe’s Farnsworth House, RNA’s Glass House builds on ideas of asymmetric design and harmonic geometric proportions and effects of transparency and reflections.
The Glass House creates a dramatic desert pavilion with international sophistication and courageous sculptural forms; a playful design that continuously provokes, challenges, and inspires the senses. A must-see for the Mid-Century purist.
According to Alex Penna, RNA’s Lead Contemporary Designer, “…what distinguishes our Glass House from Modernist architecture is the fact that the design can be seen as a sculptural form. There is nothing that can hold back a great design”.
RNA created a sustainable and energy-efficient design for the Palm Springs location with highly-insulated masonry walls and glass panels, and used state-of-the-art parametric computer modeling to create a canopy that blocks direct sunlight yet provides an abundant source of natural light to illuminate the interior space. The intelligent design provides shading from the intense desert sun and takes full advantage of cross-ventilation.”
The Glass House interior design features an open-plan kitchen, dining space, and great room that seamlessly integrates with the exterior landscape. The wrap-around pool, infinity waterfall, and shaded outdoor living space create an ideal atmosphere for weekend relaxation, family gatherings, and entertainment.
RNA’s awards for architectural design include 11 American Institute of Architects awards. RNA has been recognized for five years running as the Top 50 Coastal Architect in the United States by the preeminent Ocean Home Magazine.
